At Freed Veterinary Hospital we understand that your pet brings you so much joy, and in return you want to give them the utmost love and care. As part of providing that care, we recommend treating your pet with a monthly heartworm preventive which not only prevents potentially deadly heartworm disease but also treats and controls other harmful internal parasites.   • Carolyn S. Kutzer, DVM

    Practice Owner, Veterinarian
    Dr. Kutzer came  to Freed Veterinary Hospital in 1993 after graduating from Ohio State University and has been the owner of Freed Veterinary Hospital since 2002.   Dr. Kutzer has special interest in the areas of surgery, rehabilitation, pain management, and endocrinology.   When Dr. Kutzer is not at the clinic, she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter.  She enjoys gardening, dog sports, crafting and repurposing, as well as reading.  Dr. Kutzer is an apprentice level beekeeper through the Virginia State Beekeepers Association.  She has quite a zoo at home.  She has 3 dogs; Dixie, the sweetie, Stella, the instigator, and Murphy, the barker.  There are also 3 cats; Patches, the grump, Winnie, the sweetie, and Skittles, the spaz. Add to that, 4 sugar gliders Tic, Tac, Toe and Checkers.  And last but not least, a bearded dragon named Smaug and multiple fish.  Dr. Kutzer enjoys training with Stella, and they are currently working on agility.

  • John D. Freed, DVM

    Veterinarian
    Dr. Freed founded Freed Veterinary Hospital in 1973, after graduating from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  Dr. Freed has served as President of the Tidewater Veterinary Medical Association, the Greater Peninsula Veterinary Medical Association, as well as serving as the Peninsula Representative to the Virginia Veterinary Medical association.  When not at the clinic, Dr. Freed enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and dog Maggie, as well as fly fishing, golfing and travel.

  • Susan Mancil, CVPM

    Office Manager
    Susan has been part of our team since 2006. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, reading,  scrap booking, walking at Ft. Monroe, and going to the OBX.  She has 2 pets at home, Bella, a 5 year old Golden Retriever, and Abbi, a 1 year old, Great Pyrenees.  In her 13 years here at Freed Veterinary Hospital, Susan has accomplished many things, including earning"Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) in August of 2018.  She looks forward to coming to work each day to achieve great things with our wonderful staff!

  • Debbie Houpt, LVT

    Licensed Veterinary Technician
    Debbie has been with us since January of 2010.  She graduated  from Blue Ridge Community College with a A.A.S in Veterinary Technology  and has been a Licensed Veterinary Technician since 2003. Debbie is a member of the Virginia Veterinary Technicians Association and the National Veterinary Technicians Association (NAVTA).  Debbie is also Fear Free and Cat Friendly certified.  Debbie's interest are in dentistry, ultrasound, radiology, laser therapy and laboratory.   When not at work, Debbie enjoys spending time with her rescued sheltie, Sandi.   When not at work, she enjoys sports events, gardening, and watching the ocean.

  • Phyllis Hutson

    Veterinary Assistant
    Phyllis has been a part of our practice since 1988.  She enjoys spending time with her daughter and granddaughter. Other interests include music, reading, TV, and movies  when there is time.

  • Tonya Marafka

    Veterinary Assistant
    Tonya loves to work here and is currently studying for her Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology.  She loves animals of all types, Stephen King books, and scary movies.  Tonya has 5 pets at home which include 3 dogs; Ziva, Gypsie, and Cujo. Tonya is looking forward to her retirement as a correctional officer in October of 2025 when she can dedicate all her time to the veterinary practice.

    Haley is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Pre-Veterinary Medicine at Old Dominion University.  In her free time Haley enjoys spending time with horses.

    Amanda has been with Freed Veterinary Hospital since 2016.  Amanda loves animals big and small.  At home she has 1 dog, Max, and 2 cats, JR and Bella.  When not working Amanda enjoys spending time with her husband, crafting, and racing and going to the beach.

    Madison is our newest addition to the team.  She is in the process of finishing her degree in Interior Design.  When not working, Madison enjoys spending her free time with her daughter Teagan, fiance Kevin, and her fur baby Jax.  *aka the bees knees

    Jamie has been with Freed Veterinary Hospital since 2003.  When not at work, she spends time with her husband, their three dogs, four cats, and three chinchillas.

  • Shelby Smith

    Animal Caregiver
    Shelby graduated with honors from Kecoughtan High School, and is currently attending  Thomas Nelson Community College to major in nursing. Shelby has  3 pets, a cat named Sammi, two dogs, Fiona and Raider (after the NFL Oakland Raiders).  Shelby's interest include art, fashion, animals, soccer, photography, and nature.  In her spare time she enjoys spending time outside, playing video games, and her favorite is hanging out with friends.

    Drake is a member of the 2019 graduating class at Hampton Christian Academy and basically grew up at Freed Veterinary Hospital.  He has 2 dogs at home, Abbi and Bella.  His interests include football, animals, music, helping others, and hanging out with friends.  Fun Fact:  His favorite NFL team is the Green Bay Packers.

    Hey! My name's Turbo and I graduated with honor from the School of Hard Knocks.  I'm responsible for a staff of 12-14 people, all of whom I am teaching to drop whatever they are doing to pay attention to me, whenever I want it.  My interest include chasing the laser light, sitting on the computer while someone is typing, catnip, supervising chart writing and offering FREE "Cat" Scans to any in house patients that I think need done.  Did I mention catnip and my blanket?    I have no spare time.  Always too busy supervising personal staff, though I do enjoy visiting with patients and socializing.  It's been a godsend that Hampton Animal Control brought me here.  I don't know what these folks would have done without me coming here to guide them along their day to day activities.  Did I mention that I like catnip a lot?

    Uno is our one eyed greeter.  You can find her in the lobby or hanging out trying to do receptionist work.  Watch out though, if she here's the treat jar rattle, she'll be there in a hurry.

    Spoox can be found wondering around the hospital greeting everyone.  When not running around with toys in his mouth, laying on charts, or rearranging syringes, he enjoys a great nap.
